New Year’s Resolutions to Help Reduce Your Stress

With the New Year fast approaching, it’s time to think about new beginnings. One of the best ways to bring positive change to your life is by investing in your health and reducing stress.

Let’s take a look at the best ways to improve your wellness in 2020.

1. Have Regular Spa Time

Stress relief is key to feeling well each and every day. One of the best ways to combat the stress that daily life can bring is by making time to relax in your hot tub or swim spa. The powerful combination of heat, buoyancy and massage, also known as hydrotherapy, not only relieves tension and tight muscles, but also encourages the production of powerful “feel-good” hormones known as endorphins. Just 20 minutes a day can have huge health benefits. So, why not give it a try?

2. Exercise Regularly

Everyone knows that exercise has numerous health benefits. But did you know you can combine your spa time with exercise? From traditional swimming to jogging to yoga, there are countless exercise options for your swim spa.

If working out in the water isn’t your thing, however, scheduling a minimum of three half-hour fitness sessions a week can have a major impact on your wellbeing. Exercise, when done on a regular basis, can reduce your body’s stress hormones by stimulating chemicals in the brain that can both relieve pain and reduce stress.

3. Get Outside

Being outdoors in the fresh air has been found to lower stress hormones significantly. While spending time outside is not always easy for urban dwellers, taking half an hour to walk in the park away from the noise of traffic is a great way to relax and rejuvenate, while also getting in a little extra physical activity. It is especially beneficial on sunny days, as sunlight has been found to stimulate serotonin levels in the brain. This “happy” hormone is a natural stress buster, so next time you’re feeling tense, head outside for a much-needed break.

4. Reduce Your Screen Time

If your job requires you to sit at a computer for several hours a day, you’re likely very familiar with screen-induced stress, eyestrain and headaches. While you may not be able to change your work situation, you can change your personal habits to include less screen time in 2020.

Instead of scrolling on your phone during your downtime, why not read a book, listen to music or do a crossword puzzle? All three actively engage your brain and stimulate your senses without straining your eyes. It has also been found that reducing screen time at night can help you to sleep better, so instead of watching Netflix right up until bedtime, why not turn off your TV an hour earlier? Your eyes and your brain will thank you.

5. Clear the Clutter

If your home or your workspace has you feeling stressed, it may be time to de-clutter. Clutter can actually cause us to feel overwhelmed which, in turn, causes stress. So if you need a little more order and organization in your life, why not do a little bit of spring-cleaning in 2020? Get rid of any items you don’t want or use and create designated spaces such as storage bins, drawers or shelves, for items that are used frequently. For this to work well, you have to commit to putting items back in their designated spot after each use.
